Robert S. Ashenberner was born on Feb.17, 1925 in Portland, the son of John and Catherine Ashenberner. He married Genevieve Ashenberner on April 8, 1943 and they enjoyed 65 years together until Genevieve's death in 2009. Robert served with distinction in the United States military in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded many medals: the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the Bronze Service Arrowhead, the Victory Medal, the Parachutist's Badge and the Purple Heart. Robert founded Ashenberner Moulding Company in 1960. The company name was subsequently changed to Ashenberner Lumber and then to Southern Oregon Lumber. In 2006, Robert retired and liquidated the company. Robert was a skilled woodworker and expert gardener; he enjoyed both hobbies during his retirement. Robert and Genevieve were long-standing members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford.

Robert is survived by his children, Robbin Botting (Jim) of Los Angeles, Samuel Ashenberner (Dolores) of Beaverton, Alan Ashenberner (Susan) of Portland, David Ashenberner (Linda) of Medford, Catherine Ashenberner of San Diego, Calif. Robert is also survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Robert will be remembered as a successful businessman and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a fan of John Wayne and these words of the actor best describe the reasons for Robert's business success: "Talk low, talk slow and don't say too much."

Viewing will be at the Hillcrest Mortuary, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd., Medford. Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. Interment will be at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Rd, Eagle Point at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
