Rev. Father James G. Scharinger, age 61, of Winnipegosis, Manitoba, Canada, died early Tuesday morning, February 23, 1999, at his parish residence in Winnipegosis, Manitoba, Canada.
Fr. Jim Scharinger was born at Sheboygan Falls, Wis., on March 20, 1937. He was the youngest child of nine children, born to parents, William and Ida Scharinger. He was baptized, confirmed, and made his first Holy Communion in St. Mary's Parish in Sheboygan Falls. He attended school from kindergarten to grade 12 in Sheboygan Falls Public School from where he graduated as valedictorian of his class on (sic) 1955. Having received scholarships to attend the Lawrence Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wis., he majored in clarinet and minored in piano. The following years, in 1956, he entered the Trappist Monastery of New Melleray Abbey, Dubuque, Iowa, where he took temporary vows and completed his course in Philosophy and two years of Theology. Leaving the monastery after the completion of his temporary vows in 1961 because of insufficient stamina for the austere monastic life, he was sent to study at the Ukrainian College in Rome by Archbishop Maxim Hermaniuk. Having to leave his studies the following year due to weak health, he returned to Sheboygan Falls to recuperate. He also taught seventh grade at St. Philip's School in Green Bay, Wis., for one year. In 1965, he joined the Trappist monks at St. Norbert, Manitoba, where he worked and played organ as a family brother. In 1967, the Abbot kindly arranged for him to complete his priestly studies at Le Grand Seminaire de St. Boniface. On August 3, 1969, he was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Maurice Baudaux at St. Andrew Bobola Church in the Archdiocese of St. Boniface, Manitoba. He served St. Bernadette's Parish in St. Boniface, then parishes in Elma, Hadashville, Whitemouth, and Ste. Rita. Later he served parishes in Haywood and Elm Creek. In 1980, he obtained bi-ritual faculties and was incarnated in the Archdiocese if (sic) Winnipeg. He first spent a year at St. Vladimir's College in Roblin where he helped teach French and familiarized himself with the Ukrainian Rite. In 1981 he was named pastor of The Pas and Flin Flon. In 1984 he was appointed to Winnipegosis and missions in Fork Rivers, Meadowlands, Rorketon, Toutes-Aides, Horyn, Winnipegosis Farms, also acquiring the parish of Weiden shortly afterwards. In 1988 at the death of Fr. M. Klymchak, pastor of Sifton, in addition to these parishes, he was also given the care of Sifton, Ethelbert, Rhodes, Venlaw, Zoria, Valley River Town and Farm Parishes.
In 1992, Fr. Scharinger obtained permission to work outside the Archdiocese. He spent two years working in the Marquette, Michigan Diocese where he was instrumental in bringing the monks of Eagle Harbor, Mich., into the Ukrainian Catholic Rite. From 1994-1997 her (sic) served the three Ukrainian Catholic parishes of North Dakota in Belfield, Fairfield, and Wilton. He was active in the Ukrainian Cultural Institute there and was elected to the North Dakota Ukrainian Hall of Fame for hie (sic) work in promoting Ukrainian culture and tradition.

Scharinger, at the request of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, returned to Manitoba where he was assigned to the parishes of Winnipegosis, Ethelbert, Rorketon, Pine River, Cowan, Pulp River, Garland, Fork Rivers, Meadowlands, Weiden, Toutes-Aides, Winnipegosis Farms, and Horyn. Throughout his ministry in the Archdiocese, Fr. Scharinger has been involved in writing for the Archdiocese newspaper, Progress Ukrainian Catholic News, and in translating books and articles from French and Ukrainian into English. Fr. Jim was a quiet mannered and gentle priest. The best interests and spiritual well-being of those he served were always of primary importance to Fr. Jim. He was comfortable in speaking with young and old, and visited his parishioners whether at home, in the hospital, or in care facilities. His articles printed in the Progress Ukrainian Catholic News, entitle "Father Jim's Story Time" were particularly appreciated by children. Fr. Jim was not hesitant to respond to the needs of the church and his parishioners. He was a humble and prayerful priest, exemplifying his strong love and dedication for Jesus Christ and His Church.

Metropolitan Michael Bzde, CSsR (sic), Bishop Stefan Soroka and the clergy of the Archdiocese officiated, with responses sung by the parish choir. The 4th Degree Honour Guard of the Knights of Columbus Councils of the area will participate. Pallbearers will be Knights from the Mossey River and Winnipegosis Councils. Clergy and the faithful of the Winnipeg Archdiocese will celebrate the Panakhyda for the soul of Fr. Jim Scharinger on the 40th day after his death, on Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Viadimir and Olga Cathedral in Winnipeg.
