In Loving Memory of Athleen Pratt Walton
Athleen Pratt Walton was born Feb. 21, 1904 in Preston, Idaho when it was part of Oneida County (In 1913, Preston became the county seat of newly formed Franklin County). She was baptized at the age of eight years old in the Logan, Utah temple. She attended elementary school in Preston, Idaho. Athleen worked at a grain storage and flour mill at the age of thirteen (and was given the nickname of "Pete"), earning $18 in two months to pay her admission to high school at the Onieda Stake Academy in Preston. Athleen left high school after three years to marry Del Walton. They raised three boys and two girls. Following her marriage she was employed making radio tubes during World War II at Itel-McCullach in Salt Lake City.

Athleen learned to play the organ and piano "by ear." She was always involved in music and played in school bands, dance bands, and at her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Athleen wrote the music and words for "Come Join the Ranks of the Priesthood" while at Cleveland, Idaho, and by request, performed it at two Stake Conferences. She taught music for 60 years.

Athleen moved to Lompoc, California in 1960 from Needles, California. She had lived in Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Washington, and California, and she served her church as a missionary for eighteen months in England. Athleen lived to the age of 92 years and, as her health permitted, was still serving as an organist at the Lompoc First Ward.

Athleen Pratt Walton died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, at her home in Lompoc, at 1004 West Apricot.

She was survived by her daughters, Beulah Mendenhall of Grace, Idaho, and Dorothy Phillips of Needles; sons, LaDell Walton of Anderson, California and Gale Walton of Lompoc; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1954, son Kay, in 1988, and by her seven sisters and three brothers.
Visitations were Jan. 8, 1997 at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, Lompoc. Services for Athleen were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, at the First Ward chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Norm Grimnes officiating. The Dedication of Grave was held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 10, 1997 at Riverview Cemetery, Needles, with Bishop William Delay officiating. Burial followed. Contributions in Athleen's memory were suggested to be made to the Latter-day Saint Charities, Inc.
