Edward Stephenson, 82 of What Cheer died Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Edward Ottis Stephenson was born in What Cheer, Iowa on July 11, 1930; the son of Harold and Selena Howard Stephenson. He was a 1949 graduate of the What Cheer High School. Ed then enlisted in the United States Army in 1952 where he served in Korea until 1954. He worked at the What Cheer Pottery from 1947-1961, with time off for his military duty. From 1961-1977 he worked for the City of What Cheer as a maintenance supervisor. Ed also served as a fireman and police officer for the City of What Cheer. In 1977 he began working for Municipal Supply until his retirement in 2000. After retiring Ed served his community as an honorary member of the fire department, helping with fireman's breakfast, the flea market, directing funeral traffic and running errands. For forty eight years he placed flags on Veterans graves for Memorial Day. Ed was a member of the Elks, Lions Club and the American Legion.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Caroline Stephenson.

Edward is survived by two daughters: Penny(Cecil Wright)Baker of Altoona and Sandra Maxwell of What Cheer; a brother, Gilbert(Pat)Stephenson of Dewitt; eight grandchildren: Andy(Dawn)Maxwell of Maryland, Shawn(Jennifer)Maxwell of Beacon, Jamie(Brian)Vink of Pella, Christopher Baker of Des Moines, Cory Baker of Cedar Falls, Duncan Wright of Cedar Falls, Cameron Wright of Indianola and Carter Wright of Altoona. Ed also leaves behind a legacy of seven great grandchildren. His extended family includes those he worked with and felt close to over the twenty three years he spent in Des Moines; Gracie, Sweet Pea, Steve and Nancy, Russ and a special friend Mary.

Funeral services will begin at 10 am Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Visitation will begin at noon on Monday; with family present from 6-8 pm. Burial will be in the McFarlan Cemetery at What Cheer. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the What Cheer Fire & Rescue or to the Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
