Jewell R. Edens, 97, of Shawnee, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, in Shawnee.

She was born April 6, 1915, to W.H. and Lou Emma (Hodges) Lawson in Oxford, Ark., and came with her family in a covered wagon settling in McLoud.

Jewell was raised and attended schools in McLoud.

She married Joseph "Webb" Norton and to this union was born a daughter, Bettie Jo. She later married Burl E. Edens on Dec. 21, 1959, in Van Buren, Ark., and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1998.

Following marriage, she lived in Shreveport, La., for a short time, returning to the Shawnee area and has been a resident of Shawnee for 60 years. Until recently, she has maintained and cared for her home and herself.

Jewell worked as a welder at Douglas Aircraft and was a "Rosie The Riveter" during WWII. She managed the sandwich shop inside the Aldridge Hotel and worked for many years in the cafeteria at Shawnee Medical Center as a registered dietician before retiring.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 30 of Tecumseh.

Jewell loved bowling, cooking, canning, flower gardening and camper traveling. She was a great dancer, story teller and had a vivacious personality. Her grandchildren were the focal point of her life, and she will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved her.

Jewell was preceded in death by both husbands; her parents; two brothers, Robert Lawson and Loyd Lawson; six sisters, Goldie Bryce, Bessie Rains, Noma Landers, Viola Langston, Thelma Wallis and Elva Aley.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Bettie Jo Sumurdy of Richardson, Texas; brother and sister- in-law, T.F. and Lillian Lawson of Meeker; two grandchildren, Douglas and Melinda Sumurdy, of Lewisville, Texas, and Traci and David Reid, of Richardson, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Ceesun and Jess Andrews, Samantha and Eric Bright, Staci Sumurdy and Summer Reid; one great-great-granddaughter, Catherine Elizabeth "Rose Bud" Andrews; and many relatives and friends.
