"Joshua J. Pruitt was my maternal great-grandfather. He was born in the Danbury area of Stokes County, North Carolina, May 15, 1861. His father was Joshua Pruitt (whom I will refer to as Joshua, Sr. for clarity’s sake) and his mother was Nancy Hensdale Pruitt. Both his parents were born in North Carolina. At the time of his birth, he had two older sisters: Minerva and Lucinda.
On March 20, 1862, his father, Joshua Sr. enlisted in the North Carolina 53rd Infantry, Co G, for a period of “three years or the war” and was mustered into the Confederate Army in April 1862 at Camp Magnum near Raleigh, NC. On his CMSR obtained from the National Archives, it states that he was “a 25 year old farmer, born in Stokes Co., NC”, and his height was 5 feet 8 inches.
When his father, Joshua Sr., departed for the war, he left behind his wife, Nancy, and their 3 children: Minerva (age 5), Lucinda (age 2) and Joshua J. (age 11 months). Less than 2 years later, on January 15, 1864, after desertion and subsequent court martial hearing, his father Joshua Pruitt Sr. was executed by firing squad. Historical documents regarding the 53rd NC show that they were in their winter quarters beginning in December, 1863 for a period of two to three months, I believe this execution probably occurred in the area of Orange Courthouse, Orange County, Virginia."

The writer goes on to explain that Joshua's first wife was Angeline Coleman who died in 1901.
