Our delightful Floretta passed away at Bowers Hospice House after a short illness. She was 95 years young.
One of 13 children born to Rev. James I. and Lula Hendrickson Souder, she had lived in Beckley since age 8.
She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School (Class of 1936), attended Beckley College, and worked in the office of Prosecuting Attorney Warren Thornhill. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Beckley and Joyful Life Baptist Church.
Floretta was preceded in death by her husband William Howard Smith, brothers Kelly, Fred, Hallie, Jack, Clyde and Eugene, and sisters Lena (Humphrey), Ollie (Richmond), Mabel (Slemp), Daisy (Hewlett), Eloise (Meadows) and Maxine (Whitlow). Thus she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by son William K. Smith, daughter Cathy (Taylor), two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1pm Tuesday, October 9 at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Phil Smith officiating.
