Obituary for Sr. Alverna Chandler, O.S.F.
Sr. Alverna Chandler, O.S.F., age 91 and a member of the Sisters of St. Francis Convent in Oldenburg, Indiana, died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the convent. Born May 15, 1914 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she is the daughter of Eleanor (Nee: Pick) and Harry Chandler.She entered the convent on September 8, 1937 and made her final vows August 12, 1943. Sr. Alverna was a teacher, principal and librarian at schools in Indiana, Ohio, Montana and New Mexico before retiring to the Motherhouse in 1995, after 55 years of service.She is survived by sister-in-laws, Ruth Chandler of Indianapolis, Indiana and Maxine Anderson of Dallas, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her sister, Sr. Ruth Marie Chandler O.S.F. and brothers John and Joseph Chandler. Visitation is Monday, April 24th, from 1-3 p.m. at the Srs. of St. Francis Motherhouse Chapel. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m., with Rev. Carl Hawver O.F.M., officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
