Son of John Tiitto / Teto and Elizabeth Lungi. Husband to Theadora Ahola-Olson. He emigrated to the USA in 1879 and settled in Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan. He and his wife Dora were married on November 17, 1898. The family moved to Peterborough, NH about 1905 before settling in Fitchburg, MA around 1907. Matthew worked as a printer for the Finnish newspaper "Raivaaja" in Fitchburg. His father and some of his brothers were also instrumental in the operation of the news publication. Matthew and Dora were the parents of 11 children:
