SHERRILL - George McKenzie Clark Jr. of Sherrill passed away Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012.
Born Feb. 7, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of George M. Clark, Sr. and Garnet Beal Clark. He graduated from Carrick High School 1941 and enlisted in the armed services (US Army) in 1942 - Detachment Medical Department Service, serving in WWII in the Pacific Theater - China, Burma, India, Australia and New Guinea.
Upon his return home he was assigned to Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham City, Utah. Because of his knowledge and expertise with horses, his final assignment was a horseback riding program for rehabilitation of amputees. He was honorably discharged November 1945. Returning to Pittsburgh, he attended University of Pittsburgh.
He married Mary Jane Menard in 1947.
Always the entrepreneur, he established several companies, ultimately becoming a salesman and the Pittsburgh representative for Jacks Tasty Snacks from Oneida, N.Y. He was named sales manager in 1958 and moved to Oneida, N.Y. retiring in 1965 when the company moved to Reading, Pa.
George was a member of the Sherrill America Legion Post 230 and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-6. He developed a particular interest in the NY State waterways where he was involved in many events and programs along the Erie Canal.
He, along with his son, established George's Boat House and Repository in 1999 in Oneida. Their knowledge and craftsmanship regarding restoration and repair of wooden boats is well known.
George is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Jerry Dowless of Herndon, Va. and Susan and Timothy LaManque of Verona, N.Y.; one son, George Menard Clark and wife Elaine of Oneida, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, plus a great group of friends from Murphy's in Oneida. The family would like to thank the 4th floor staff at the Oneida Extended Care Facility for their concern and care.
A warm, friendly, out-going personality made George well-liked and respected in the entire community.
Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 2, 4-6:30 p.m. with a service to follow at Malecki Funeral Home, 464 Sherrill Road, Sherrill, N.Y. Committal Service is Saturday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. at the St. Helena's/Valley View Cemetery, Middle Road, Oneida, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of George's passion for all things nautical, a memorial fund has been established. Donations can be sent to Town of Lenox, Canal Boat "Pierre" Fund. 205 South Peterboro St. Canastota, N.Y. 13032
