Born 1872 in Switzerland Co, Indiana. Her parents, William Marion Paugh and Nancy Glaze, purchased land in Fawn Creek Twp on the road, later called Tenth Street Road, that ran south from Independence. The site was one and one half miles north of where Deering would later be located.
Life was not easy for William Paugh's family. In Jan, 1875, a letter went back to Indiana saying their family had been sick and were out of money with no feed for livestock other than borrowed hay.
On her 16th birthday, Mary married 21 year old Mark Wilson. Their wedding was in the Paugh home at Jefferson. Mark, called Mack, was the son of Mark and Ann M Wilson, also of Jefferson. One year later, a daughter was born and they named her Myrtle May.
Tragedy struck on Dec 13, 1890. Mack was working in a coal mine on Coal Creek, some four miles toward Independence from their home. He and Joseph Thompson were in a small shaft when a large stone fell and crushed Mack. It took all day to free his body.
Mary worked at the Caldwell House, a renowned Independence hotel at Penn and Laurel. There she met a widower named William Edwin Phillips. He was 15 years her senior and had three teenage sons. They were married in 1894.
Will Phillips came to Kansas from Wisconsin in 1870. He first worked in Independence at a harness shop. He then opened his own shop in Neodesha. He married Matilda Squires and they homesteaded land in Sycamore Valley. Matilda died leaving Will with three sons.
Mary bought a house at 501 West Main in Cherryvale and lived there from 1925 until 1942 when she moved to Independence. She died at age 93.
