DANVILLE, Va. - Katie Ellen Spangler Shorter, 93, formerly of 644 Elizabeth Street Extension, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Feb. 22, 1910, in Patrick County, she was the daughter of the late Lindsey Elbert Spangler and Sarah Ellen Goins Spangler.

She lived most of her life in Danville and had lived at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for six and a half years.

She was a member of The Church of the Brethren.

She was married to Willie Wesley Shorter, who predeceased her April 10, 1965.

She is survived by two sons, Willard Wesley Shorter and Wallace Thurman Shorter, both of Danville; one daughter, Maggie S. Burr of Axton; one sister, Sammie Payne of Greensboro; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one brother and four sisters.

The graveside service will be held 2 pm. Tuesday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home.
