GATES - Robert Leon Umphlett Sr., 75, of the 200 block of Middle Swamp Road, died Friday, July 23, 2010 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
Mr. Umphlett was born in Gates County and was the son of the late Mills Edward and Lucy Eure Umphlett. The retired president of Umphlett Brothers Farms, he was a member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Rountree; and brothers, Milton, James, and J. Randolph Umphlett.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Emeline Smith Umphlett; a daughter, Phyllis Umphlett Hobbs and her husband Chuck of Corapeake; two sons, Robbie Umphlett of Gates and his friend Susan Baines and Joseph Carter Umphlett of Miami; four grandchildren, Christina Lynn Umphlett, Jordan Brooks, Clint Randolph Umphlett, and Graham Carter Hobbs; six sisters, Norene Taylor of Gates, Cordis Dudley of Chesapeake, Lois Lawrence of Suffolk, Marian Spivey of Gatesville, Faye Hoffler of Sunbury and Alta Gray of Longwood, Fla.; and two brothers, Ralph Umphlett of Manteo and M.Q. Umphlett of Gates.
A funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Middle Swamp Baptist Church by the Rev. Burt Pearce. A private burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
Flowers are welcomed or contributions in his memory may be made to Middle Swamp Baptist Church, c/o Brenda Umphlett, 275 Middle Swamp Road, Gates, NC 27937.
