John seems to have had a large family with his first wife, Margaret. Then, on 1 Nov 1882 in Cook County, Illinois he was married to Hulda Becker, who had a number of children of her own. By 1892 John and Hulda had moved to Pierce County, Washington. They had six children: Andrew, Michael, Fred, Albert Leo, Ellen and Charles.

From The Tacoma Daily Ledger, 29 Sep 1914, page 3:
John Hicks, age 87, a resident of Tacoma 25 years and a basket maker by occupation, died yesterday at a local hospital. He is survived by five sons, John, jr., of Illinois; Fred, Charles, George and Allen all of Roy. The body was removed to the C.C. Mellinger company's.
