The following is a quote from Irise Holt Oliphant, " Cora was not born deaf, but after having meningitis as a toddler she was found not to be able to hear. This was discovered when she failed to notice the ringing of a loud bell calling the ranch hands to noon meal." On 25 Oct. 1899 she entered the School for the Deaf in Austin, Travis Co., TX. Cora graduated on 12 May 1913 and remained on the staff of the school until her retirement in 1953. Cora was a ranch hand, student, basketball player,school leader, resident educator, supervisor, hall of fame ( education) gym named after her, volunteer and retirement. She never married.
