He was born Sept. 19, 1924, at Palestine, Wirt County, W.Va., a son of the late Wirt Richard and Loi Lott Newbanks.
Robert retired as a bricklayer and was a lifetime member of the Bricklayers Union. He was a true outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing chess and was a great dancer. He was a U.S. Navy wounded veteran, having served in World War II, and was later a member of the VFW.
Surviving is a daughter, Judy J. Harris and husband, Troy, of Parkersburg; a son, Russell Earic Newbanks of Waverly, W.Va.; two brothers, Lloyd L. and Ralph D. Newbanks; one sister-in-law, Helen Newbanks; one brother-in-law, Millard Atkinson Sr.; 18 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma V. Snider Newbanks; and 10 siblings.
A committal service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sunset Memory Gardens Chapel of Peace with Mr. Jim Lynch officiating and full military rites conducted by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg.
The Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, is assisting the family with arrangements.
