Harold R. Smiley, 73, of Shermans Dale, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at his home. He was born on Saturday, April 1, 1939, in Shermans Dale, a son of the late Donald A. Smiley, Sr. and Elma R. (Shearer) Smiley.
Harold attended the former Perry Joint School in New Bloomfield. He retired from the Nestle Purina Co., Mechanicsburg. Harold was an active member of the Bible Baptist Church in New Bloomfield. He was a member of the Shermans Dale Fire Co. and Camp Smiley of Potter County. Harold was a devout follower and had a deep love of the Lord. He enjoyed and was always willing to help people, loved tinkering, repairing things and flea markets. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Opal Y. (Paulus) Smiley, four children; Rodger L. Smiley (and wife, Debra) of Landisburg, Darla R. Lupfer (and husband, Dennis) of Shermans Dale, Kevin J. Smiley (and wife, Teresa) of Shermans Dale and Darrell L. Smiley (and wife, Lisa) of Mechanicsburg, three brothers; Donald Smiley, Jr. and John Smiley, both of Shermans Dale and Lester Smiley of New Bloomfield, one sister, Yvonne (Smiley) Bailey of Shermans Dale, nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by one brother, Norman "Bill" Smiley and one sister, Evelyn (Smiley) Kreiser.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. in the Bible Baptist Church, 1757 New Bloomfield Rd., New Bloomfield, PA 17068, with Pastors James God and Frank Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Young's United Methodist Church, Shermans Dale. A viewing will be held on Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of the service. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the church for the purchase of bibles to be distributed in South America. Please visit
