First Lieutenant Messick perished when U.S. Army Air Corps B-24E Liberator #42-7053 collided with a 20 million cubic feet natural gas storage tank, at the intersection of West 73rd Street and Central Park Avenue in Chicago, after departing the Municipal Airport (now Midway International Airport).

All twelve crew aboard were killed:
