Diane F. Sturman, 67, of Indialantic, Fla., died on Aug. 19, 2009, after a 3 1/2 year battle with ovarian cancer. Funeral services will be held at Gutterman and Musicant, 402 Park St., Hackensack, N.J., at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23, with interment following at Cedar Park Cemetery. Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., Diane graduated cum laude with honors in chemistry from Bryn Mawr College. She received a master of science in chemistry from Cornell University; teaching certifications in chemistry, physics, and mathematics from Montclair State College, and a master of regional planning degree from SUNY - Albany. She had been an associate member of the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J., a science teacher at Summit Junior High School in Summit, N.J., and Linton High School in Schenectady, N.Y. Diane served as a member and then chairperson of the planning board in New Providence, N.J., where she was subsequently twice elected a member of the New Providence, N.J., Borough Council. After a move to upstate New York, Diane was appointed in 1989, as the town planner in Niskayuna, N.Y., where she served in this capacity for 10 years. During her subsequent retirement, and residence in Indialantic Fla., she was an active mentor of students in the Take-Stock-In-Children Scholarship program. Diane is survived by her husband of 44 years, Joel; her sons, Daniel and Michael; her seven grandchildren, Amelia, Caleb, Emily, Helen, Mark, Samantha, and Yu Yu; her sister, Carol Falcione, and her mother, age 97, Stella Falcione. They, as well as the students and communities she has served, will forever keep her in loving memory.
