He and his wife Judith first lived in NY near his brother Theodore and his sister Pauline and husband Peter Buhl.
While in NYS Gustav and Judith had two children; Fannie born in 1852 and Charles born in 1856.
They removed to Cook County IL where Gustav worked as a painter and where they had two more children; Sophia in 1861 and Henry in 1866.
