Clarence Calkins was the son of Clara Rostochil and Charles Knapp Calkins(II).As a young man he moved to California but returned to Michigan where he attended a barber college in Grand Rapids.For more than 30 years he had a barbershop on Buchanan Ave. in SW Grand Rapids. On June 29,1935, he married Wilma Anne Mickel (b. 12/31/1909;d. 4/2/1980)in Grand Rapids. They had three children: Roger, Susan, and Sara. Roger and Sara died as infants.
