Gary Lee Schafer
Gary Lee Schafer, son of Leonard and Gertrude Schafer, was born Nov. 7, 1947 at Tobias, Neb., and died May 10, 1988 as the result of a traffic accident* 11 miles north of Fairbury, Neb.
He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Tobias, by the Rev. Winkler on Nov. 23, 1947, and confirmed on May 26, 1962 at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Daykin, Neb., by the Rev. John Reehl.
On May 31, 1968, he married Catherine Johnson at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Daykin. To this union were born two daughters.
He and his family raised cattle and farmed in the Daykin area.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine; daughters, Rachael and Nicole of the home; parents, Leonard and Gertrude Schafer of Daykin; sisters, Darlene Schellhorn of Beatrice and LaJean Hamouz of Friend.
Services were May 13 from Grace Lutheran Church in Fairbury with the Rev. Charles Schmidt officiating. Glenda Junker and Norma Jean Wurm provided special music. Burial in the Fairbury Cemetery with graveside service by Daykin American Legion Post 198. Pallbearers were Dennis Hennerberg, Mike Compton, Myron Schwisow, Alfred Schoen, Bruce Nolte and Erwin Ebke.

* In a newspaper article printed in the Beatrice Daily Sun the year following his death, this was stated: "He was pulling a trailer of cows to Fairbury for pregnancy tests when the trailed bumped a bridge rail and the vehicle careened out of control.
