PAUL MERRILL "SKIP" CHOATE, JR.
Paul "Skip" Merrill Choate, Jr., of Gainesville, FL died on Sunday July 29, 2012 after a twelve year battle with Multiple Myeloma. Skip was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont April 17, 1948. Raised in Monroe, New Hampshire, he attended high school in Wallingford, Connecticut at Choate School (presently Choate Rosemary Hall). He attended the University of Vermont in Burlington prior to entering the United States Air Force in 1969 and serving a tour in Vietnam. Upon discharge from the USAF Skip returned to college at the University of New Hampshire to complete his undergraduate degree in Entomology. He moved to Gainesville to attend graduate school at the University of Florida in 1975 where he received his PhD. He was employed in the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida where he taught classes in Entomology and Computer Technology.
Throughout his career Skip published over 37 professional articles and authored a book entitled Tiger Beetles: A Field Guide and Identification Manual for Florida and Eastern United States, University of Florida Press, 2003. Professional memberships included the National Association of College Teachers in Agriculture, Coleopterists Society, Nature Conservancy, and Henning Society. In 1998, he was presented the Achievement Award for Teaching by The Florida Entomological Society.
Skip's hobbies and interests included photography, hiking, fishing, camping, insect collecting, running and cycling. In high school, he played football, basketball and baseball, excelling in the latter as a southpaw pitcher. He ran nineteen marathons and one ultra marathon that he won. His cycling career included finishing the Assault on Mount Mitchell twice as well as the two thousand mile Five Points of Life (2008) bike ride through Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida to raise awareness for blood, apheresis, marrow, cord blood, and tissue and organ donation. Skip supported the Cure By Design fashion show as a cancer survivor model for five years, helping to raise money for the American Cancer Society and to celebrate cancer survivorship.
Skip is survived by his wife Angela "Angie" Luplow Choate, daughter Teresa Choate (Jan Radovan), mother Elvira Choate, sister Mamie Watson, brother Frederick "Fred" Choate (Karen Nelsen), niece, Christina Choate, nephews, Tucker and Schuyler Watson, and his two dachshunds, Abby and Roxy. He was predeceased by his father Dr. Paul Merrill Choate, Sr. and two nephews Eric and Alexander Choate.
In lieu of flowers contributions in Skip's honor may be made to a charity of your choice or one of Skip's favorites that include Wounded Warrior Project, Haven Hospice or the Alachua County Humane Society.
Graveside Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery 7204 SE County Road 234 Gainesville, FL (GPS possibly inaccurate). Directions to cemetery: Take Highway 441 south to Micanopy, turn left (head east) on County Road 234, drive 5.6 miles, the cemetery entrance is on the left (north side of highway).
