Tuesday, 21 Jun 1859, "Disasters & c.", Providence Daily Journal:
"Island, six miles from East Mathias about 3 o'clock in the morning of the 16th instant during thick weather and became a total wreck. Only three of the crew were saved. Among them was John V. Baker of Wickford, R. I. Capt. Wm. Cotter, her commander and John H. Fowler, aged 16 years, son of Capt. Henry Fowler of Wickford, were among the number lost. Capt. C. was also a resident of Wickford where he was much beloved and respected by all that had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He leaves a wife and one daughter to mourn his loss."
Two days later on 23 Jun 1859 The Providence Daily Journal provided additional details:
"The bluff off Cross Island, where the ship Bolton, of Bath was lost, is very high and jagged. Instantly, on the alarm of the first shock, the captain, officers, and all of the crew rushed to the jib boom, hoping to reach the shore, but of the eighteen persons resting on that temporary support, sixteen were washed off by one sea, and fifteen perished. Three persons, the second mate (Mr. John V. Baker of Wickford, R. I.) and two of the crew, only saved themselves, and of the last named one was washed off the jib boom three times, and at last was fortunate enough to get on the rocks in a very exhausted state."
John V. Baker, one of the fortunate is buried in Lot-234. He died at the age of 67. William M. Cotter is buried in lot 42, and John H. Fowler is buried in Lot 46. He died at the age of 16. In 1870, John's parents Capt. Henry Fowler and Mary lost another son, Theodore Fowler, in the sinking of the schooner Ben Butler by a steamer Thetis off Watch Hill, RI.
