Mary E. (Barton) McGrath of Newington, wife of the late John J. McGrath, died Friday, (August 16, 2002) surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Waterbury, the daughter of the late William and Anna (Connole) Barton. She graduated from Crosby High School, class of 1926. Mary a 1928 New Britain Normal School graduate went on to teach at the Holcomb Street School (now Rawson) in Hartford. Mary always said that she was fortunate to teach when "teachers did the teaching and parents did the parenting." Mary leaves her daughter, Judith A. McGrath, her son, Leo T. McGrath and his fiancee Chantal Stupnitzki and her children Devin and Justin of Newington; her daughter-in-law, Helen T. McGrath of Rocky Hill. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought so much joy to her life. She leaves her grandchildren and their spouses, Mary and Bill Defurio, and Anne Marie McGrath of Rocky Hill, Diane and Richard Hughes of Cromwell, William McGrath of Middletown, John and Wendy McGrath of Wethersfield, Attorney Leo and Grace Ann McGrath of Carmel, NY, Michael T. McGrath of East Hampton and Jennifer McGrath of Anchorage Alaska. She leaves 12 great grandchildren, Sarah, Amanda, Katie, Emily and Rebecca Hughes, Michael, Lisa, Julia, and Karen DeFurio, Lori Camilleri, Amelia and Malcom McGrath. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, J. Barton McGrath, a brother and sister-in-law, William and Mary Barton, and a sister and brother-in-law, Nan F. and Weston Maher. Her funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Avenue in Newington followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Newington. Interment will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield. Friends and relatives are invited to call Tuesday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Newington Memorial. Memorial donations may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor c/o St. Joseph's Residence, 1365 Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082-4900.
