U.S. Senator. Educated at the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, he taught school, studied law, graduated from the National Law School, in 1853, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Buffalo, New York. Moving to Wisconsin, in 1857, he engaged in banking, was a member of the Wisconsin Senate (1863-64, 1871-72), a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly (1866-67) and a regent of the University of Wisconsin, (1866-75). In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, served until 1881 and was again elected to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Matthew H. Carpenter, serving (1881-85). Not a candidate for reelection, he returned to his banking and legal interests until his death at age 70.
