Captian with the Thirty-second United States infantry

After arriving in the United States Patrick enlisted as a private in The General Mounted Service on 14 February 1855 and was assigned to Company L,2nd Cavalry on 5 June 1855 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He was promoted to corporal 3 December 1858 and reenlisted 14 November 1859. He was sent to Fort Mason, Texas, where he was promoted to sergeant on 23 December 1860. When Texas joined the Confederacy he was reassigned. On 14 May 1861 he was made a second Lieutenant assigned to the 14th U.S. Infantry where he served throughout the Civil War. He fought in most of the major battles and was made brevet captain and later brevet major for gallant and meritorious service.

After the war he was returned to the rank of first lieutenant and assigned to Fort Vancouver, Washington. In October 1865 he came to Fort Boise, Idaho Territory with his family. On 25 June 1866 he was sent to Warm Springs, Oregon to establish an army post. Mary stayed in Fort Boise where Carrie was born 2September 1866. He was transferred to the 32nd Infantry and sent to Arizona with his family where they stayed for three years, eight months before being assigned to recruiting duty in Sacramento, California. They spent three years at Camp Harney, Oregon before returning to Fort Boise in September 1876.
