Wesley fought for the North in the Civil War and honorably served in Company B, of the 81st Indian Volunteer Infantry. He marched on Atlanta with Sherman, was at the Battle of Stone River and several other interesting campaigns. By the time he died, his hands were so crippled with rheumatism that he could only make an "X" to sign his name.

Wesley's father was William Gross. William was the son of Dr. Wilheim Carl Gross of Maryland and Washington County, Virginia. Wesley's mother, Eve, lived to be 99 years, 2 months and 22 days. She was once given $2.50 in gold at a 4th of July celebration for being the oldest resident of Washington County, Indiana.

Wesley's son was William Oliver Gross, b. 1857. His grandchildren in Nebraska were named Annie, Vernon, Raymond and Ida. Raymond (deceased) was my father. Raymond moved his family to Seattle, Washington in 1937 due to the dought and "black blizzards" of the era. Wesley is my great-great Ggandfather.

Wesley was 5'-6: tall, had blue eyes and brown hair according to his Civil War Pension files.
He married Mournen (Malone) Gross March 21, 1847. She was born in 1825 and died Jan 26, 1866. They had 3 children: Sarah C., Margaret E., and William Oliver. After the Civil War, Wesley moved with his son, William Oliver, to Tryon Nebraska. At the end of his life, being very ill, Wesley moved back to Indiana and lived out the rest of his life with his daughter, Margaret E.(Heitman).
