Zulu War Victoria Cross Recipient. Educated at Eton, he was commissioned an officer into the 60th Rifles, British Army in 1858 and remained in the Army for over 40 years. He served in India in 1859, China in 1860, spent nine years in Canada as Company Commander, took part in the expedition to put down a rebellion on the Red River, Manitoba and in the Second Ashanti War 1873. During the Zulu War 1879, he was a Colonel in command of the Frontier Light Horse Cavalry in South Africa. At the Battle of Hlobane, on March 28, 1879, in fighting against a large Zulu Army he rescued 400 injured men, restored the morale of the force and beat off a four-hour attack by 20,000 Zulus. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 17, 1879. He later was promoted to Major General, he served at the War Office as Adjutant General and as Commander in Chief in the Second Boer War, (1899-1902). He retired from active service in 1903.
