Rev. John Caley Craine
Last Rites Are Held Saturday For Former Minister, Rev. Craine
Residents of Princeville and community were grieved to learn of the death of one of its former and beloved citizens, Rev. J. C. Craine, 84, who passed away in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oral A. Dowse, in Kempton last Thursday evening following a lingering illness.
John Caley Craine was born February 17, 1866 is Sulby, Isle of Man, England. He was the eldest of three children. His younger brother, the Rev. William Henry Craine, D. D. preceded him in death 12 years ago, his only sister, Elizabeth Craine live her entire life in the old family home, passing away five years ago.
At the age of 17 years, Mr. Craine converted and joined Wesleyan Methodist Chapel of Sulby. When he was 21, he became a local preacher. The outstanding event of his 25ht year was his decision to come to America where he joined his friend, John Killip and his brother William at Hedding college in Abingdon. He then furthered his education and received his M. A. degree from Illinois Wesleyan university.
While attending school in Abingdon he acted as student pastor, at Rapatee, where he met Kate Johnson whom he married May 24, 1899. To this union were born four children; Daniel Caley who died in infancy, Mona Elizabeth, Sulby DeVore and Janet Lesayre.
In 1902 he was received into full membership in Central Illinois Conference. He served the following charges, Orin, Port Bryon, Bardolph, Cornell, Grand Ridge, Oquawaka, Woodhall, Lexington, East Peoria and Princeville. It was here in Princeville he retired from active pastoral work in 1936. He purchased a home here and for a time he was a supply pastor in Stark.
Because of failing health he moved to Kempton, where he spent the remainder of his long and useful life in the home of his daughter, Janet Dowse.
The Rev. Craine always took great pride in the fact that he became a naturalized American citizen as soon as it was possible for him to do so, but he still possessed great love for the little isle in which he was born. This was evidenced by the fact that he was elected president of the Manx Association of Peoria for several consecutive years. When no longer able to serve in the capacity he was honored by being named honorary president of the organization.
His good sense of humor and pleasant personality won for him a host of friends. He was a good father and a devoted husband and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held in the local Methodist church Saturday afternoon with Rev. James J. Gross in charge. Assisting Rev. Gross in the service were Dr. T. E. Newland and Dr. M. L. O'Hara, both of Galesburg, Rev. W. Butler of Varna, Rev. A. H. Nordthruft of Magnolia and Rev. Glen Gothare of Kempton.
Rev. R. Gordon of Galesburg, Rev. Wilbur Powell of East Peoria and Rev. J.M. Bliss were among the ministers attending the services.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Frank Carman and Mrs. Victor Turven with Gladys Pierce at the organ. Rev. Craine was laid to rest in the Abingdon cemetery. Pallbearers were all members of the Manx Association.
