US Congressman, US Senator. He was a prominent Ohio politician in the years before World War I. Born in Akron, Dick held his first public office as Auditor of Summit County from 1886 to 1894; he studied law in his spare time, and after being admitted to the bar he left the auditor's job to open a legal practice in Akron. He was secretary of the Republican National Committee (1896 to 1900), and during the Spanish-American War served with the 8th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In 1898 Dick was elected to the Fifty-Fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Stephen A. Northway; he was reelected to the three succeeding Congresses, representing Ohio's 19th District, and served until his resignation in 1904. That year he was twice elected to the US Senate, to complete the term of the late Marcus A. Hanna and for the ensuing full term; he served until 1911. During his 13 years on Capitol Hill Dick was Chairman of the Committees on Militia, Indian Depredations, and Mines and Mining. Defeated for reelection in 1910, he resumed law practice with offices in Washington, DC and Akron, and did not abandon politics until he failed to win the Republican nomination for Senator in 1922. From 1941 until his death at 86, Dick was the oldest living former US Senator.
