He served for 30 years as a Congregational clergymen. In 1892, he was ordained in the Episcopal Church. He retired from the active ministry in 1910 and remained Rector emeritus of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville, New York. After he retired, he moved to Birmingham to live with his son.
