Sir Matthew Hale was the son of Robert Hale of Alderley, Gloucestershire County, England and Joan Poyntz Hale (Toyntz Hale) of Alderley, Gloucestershire County, England. Joan and Robert had one child. Sir Matthew Hale was christened on 05 November 1609 in Alderley, Gloucester County, England. Robert Hale was the son of a rich and charitable clothier of Wotton-under-Edge, and he was a member of the society of Lincoln's Inn. For some time Robert practiced as a barrister. Matthew's mother was a daughter of Matthew Poyntz, a gentleman then living at Alderley. Matthew became an orphan before he was five years old. He was committed to the guardianship of Anthony Kingscote, of Kingscote, who entrusted the education of the orphan boy to Mr. Staunton, the puritan vicar of Wotton-under-Edge, under whose care he made such excellent progress in his studies that before he was 17 he entered Magdalen Hall (now Hertford College), with a view taking holy orders.
