Mr. McCombs' mother died when he was three years old and he was reared in the home of his uncle and and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Byrd. This family moved to Texas when he was 13 years old and he returned here when he was 18. He became manager and president of the Cape County Milling Co. when the company was organized.

In the business world Mr. McCombs was successful in the production of flour and the by-products of wheat. The product he made sold on foreign markets and all over the United States. He was a member of the Southern Illinois Millers Association and of the Merchant's Exchange in St. Louis.

Mr. McCombs became affiliated with the Methodist Church in 1896 and since then had been a member of Board of Stewards. One of the leaders in the movement that resulted in the building of the New McKendree Church. He was also active in the effort that resulted in the restoration of Old McKendree Chapel for which he served as trustee. He served as superintendent of the New McKendree Sunday School for 40 years.
