In November 1983, Susan Hamwi was found murdered in her Fort Lauderdale home. . As a result, her infant daughter, Shane Hamwi, was left unattended for several days, and she died from dehydration. During the course of the investigation, it was learned that Paul Hamwi, the victim's ex-husband, had a "motive for the murders," but the investigation focused on John Gordon Purvis, a neighbor of the victims. Purvis was a mentally disabled adult, diagnosed as a non-violent schizophrenic. There was no evidence to convict him but the jurors were not convinced of Johnny's innocence and declared him guilty. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent 9 years in prison before his conviction was set aside in 1993. In 1994 Paul Hamwi and Paul Serio were convicted of murdering Susan Hamwi and are serving life in prison. Hamwi paid Robert Beckett and Serio $14,000 to kill his wife to get out of paying $180,000 divorce settlement. Beckett was granted immunity after agreeing to cooperate in the investigation.
