Mary Jane Bowers, believed to have been born in Arkansas, was the daughter of William S. and Lucretia Bowers and the oldest of their three known children. Her siblings were Emmaline and Jesse Ash. Mary Jane, called Jane in the 1850 census, is said to have been mentally disabled. After her parents' deaths, Jessee took responsibility for her care. He was 15 years old at the time (about 1869).

Mary Jane gave birth to a daughter, Minnie Ann, when she was about 27. Presumably, Jesse cared for Mary Jane and his niece for the next 14 or so years, until Minnie Ann married. She and her husband, James Henry "Jim" Bradshaw, took over Mary Jane's care. Mary Jane died in 1891 at the age of 47 years 27 days. Her son-in-law is said to have borrowed enough money to bury her, but swore he would never borrow again and never did.
