Joseph Shelton Middleton was the eldest son of Confederate soldier Richard Benjamin Middleton and his wife Mary Emily McGowen. He was the second child among four sisters and two brothers.

In December 1885, 25 year old Joseph married 16 year old Elizabeth "Lizzie" Corine Simmons, the daughter of Richard E. and Missouri Simmons. They were man and wife for thirty years, until her death of a stroke at age 47. Together he and Lizzie would have eight children, two of which didn't survive until adulthood. It is believed that all of their children were born in Liberty County Georgia.

Sometime prior to 1900 Joseph was employed as a section foreman by Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He remained an employee of ACL for the rest of his life.

His first wife Lizzie died in January of 1916. In October of that same year he remarried 22 year old Hazel Wells in Sebring Florida. Joseph was 56 years old at the time.

Barely nine months later he would telegraph his sister: "Dear Georgia, Wife dead. Will leave here tonight for Erie Penn, will see you before long. Bro. J. S. Middleton, Sr." The cause of her untimely death is not known, nor is the location of her grave.

Joseph's younger sister Georgia Middleton Swindell (died 1935) kept a huge trove of correspondence that was found intact among the personal items of the late Tommy Houston. Georgia's letters paint the picture of a dedicated and hardworking family man who constantly helped immediate and extended family members through hard times.

Joseph died of a faulty heart valve at 5:17 pm on May 24th 1927 at his home in Walthourville, Georgia. He was 67 years old.
