U.S. Congressman. He was a Captain of the Pennsylvania Militia, (1793-95), was an associate judge of Crawford County, (1803-18), participated in the War of 1812 and was brigade inspector of the western district of Pennsylvania, (1800-17). In addition, he was secretary of the Pennsylvania land office, (1818-21), Pennsylvania State Treasurer, (1821-27) and Treasurer of the United States, (1828-29). In 1833, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1837.
After his term, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at age 77.
