Arthur came with his parents to Clay County, Kansas from Dewitt, Michigan when he was two years old. They settled on a farm near Green, along with his three sisters and brother.
Arthur married Emma Hammer, a native of Scales Mound, Illinois, on June 28, 1903 in Clay County, Kansas. They continued to live on the McMillan family farm with their three children until 1917, when they moved to a farm near Idana, Kansas. Four years later Arthur retired from farm activites on the advise of his doctor because of a heart ailment. They were living in Clay Center at the time of his death, having moved there in 1945.

In 1925 he joined the Presbyterian Church at Idana, where he was a faithful member, attending the services regularly as long as he was able to go.
Being a great lover of little children, he had lots of joy the last few years in playing with his grandchildren."
Granddaughter Jean remembers him as a quiet, hard working man. He was proud of his farm team of mules. Grandson Art and his Grandpa McMillan were close buddies when Art spent time on the farm every summer.
