In addition to the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Mary Roberta is survived by a brother, Robert (Dorothy) Lyness of Ryan; two sisters-in-law, Pat Lyness of Greely, Colo., and Rosina Lyness of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Donald, Louis, and Patrick; a sister, Mary Lyness; and a sister-in-law, Bernice Lyness.
She was born Oct. 30, 1917, in Ryan, the daughter of Arthur and Catherine Devine Lyness. She entered the Cedar Rapids Community of the Sisters of Mercy on July 16, 1935, and professed final vows on July 14, 1941.
Sister Mary Roberta attended Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids and received her B.A. from Loras College in Dubuque and her M.Ed. From St. Louis University. She also attended Iowa State University, Ames; the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; the University of Notre Dame; Loyola University, Chicago, Ill.; and Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis.
Sister Mary Roberta taught in area elementary and secondary schools from 1938 to 1956. She served at the following Iowa schools: Immaculate Conception, Elma; St. Benedict, Decorah; St. Joseph, De Witt; Immaculate Conception, Charles City; and St. Matthew and Immaculate Conception, Cedar Rapids. She served on the faculty of Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, as a history and sociology instructor from 1956 to 1988.
During her time at Mount Mercy, Sister was a Fullbright Scholar (1961). From 1988 to 1992, Sister was the parish visitor at St. Nicholas Parish in Evansdale. After retiring to Sacred Heart Convent in 1992, Sister Mary Roberta became a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, where she provided 7,149 hours of volunteer service.
