Robert J. Lyness, 79, died Monday morning, June 9, 2003, in Regional Medical Center, Manchester, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, by the Rev. Ralph Simington. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, where a rosary begins at 4 p.m. The family will also greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Robert was born April 14, 1924, on the family farm near Ryan, Iowa, the son of Arthur L. and Catherine (Devine) Lyness.

He received his education in Ryan, graduating from St. John's Catholic School.

On Jan. 15, 1946, Robert was united in marriage to Dorothy Kehrli at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ryan, of which he was a lifetime member.

The couple farmed south of Ryan before moving into town in 1981. In addition to farming Bob sold cars for Kehrli & Kehrli in Ryan.

Bob was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He dearly loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Robert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy; his children, Coleen (Rick) Timmons of Manchester, Marilee (Carl) Steffen of Ryan, Jolene (Mitchell) Ryan of Manchester, Bill (Stacey) Lyness of Munster, Ind., and Jerry (Sue) Lyness of Ramona, Calif.; his grandchildren, Rob Timmons, Jamey and Jay Steffen, Joanna Schaul, Marisa, Allison and Blake Ryan and Emily and Mitchell Lyness; and two sisters-in-law, Rozina Lyness of Manchester and Patsy Lyness of Greeley, Colo.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Catherine Lyness; an infant son, James Robert Lyness; three brothers, Donald, Louis and Patrick Lyness; and two sisters, Mary Lyness and Sister Mary Roberta Lyness.

Memorials in honor of Robert may be directed to the Endowment Fund, established for Sister Mary Roberta Lyness, at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.
