Benjamin Franklin Wallick(ack) or B.F. or ``Frank´´
Ben Franklin Wallick, or ``Frank´´ as he was called, came with his father (my Grandpa Ben) to visit Aunt Eliza and
Uncle Solomon and to see this ``grand prairie country´´ in 1859. He too liked it. Then war came along and during
that time as a soldier he met Ella Green, a teacher from Washington County, Ohio, whom he married 26 December
1871.
Frank became a prominent citizen in Effingham, Kansas, and like his father you would find him concerned with
everything of importance to his town and its people. Generous to a fault and helping anyone in need, he was a
patriotic man as were most of the men those days. He served in the army, having joined as Grandpa´s substitute at the age of 16. He mustered out 16 November 1864, at war´s close from Company D-17th Kansas. His favorite
achievement was in the work he did to get the Atchison County High School built in Effingham. There was a
struggle and since Effingham was the county seat, he felt it centered the reach of most of the small towns and
would make access much easier for the youth that could come. [This would allow them to] come more readily.
Many homes would open to those who needed board and room for the week. He was elected Senator to the State
Legislature, which helped, and was successful in getting this done. He was then called father of Atchison County
High School. The new courthouse was then settled in Atchison. The school was noted for its high standard of
training and is still progressive and is now called by a new name-Atchison County Community High School-which
is hard for a former graduate to say.
Frank was State Senator in 1894. The next spring he was hurt in a runaway accident, being thrown from his surrey.
He died 11 May 1897 of a heart attack, which it was felt was caused at least partially from the accident. Frank was
a much beloved citizen and many widows, orphans, and others could have told of his many generous deeds. It was
said that his left had never knew what his right hand was doing. It was a real blow to his father (Ben) who was so
proud of him, also his still young family, as well as to the county and state.
