Adjutant General, Kansas Militia. Served as the first Kansas Territorial Adjutant General from Aug 1855- Jan,1858 and its 3rd Adjutant General from Nov 1860 - Apr 1861. He was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. In 1855, he settled in Shawnee county, Kansas and became a member of the first territorial council. From August 31,1855 till January 1858,he was adjutant general of the state militia. In 1858, he became the first territorial auditor and held it until Kansas was admitted into the Union on Jan 31, 1861. General Strickler was commander-in-chief during the Wakarusa War from November 26 to December 7,1855. This war was between pro and anti-slavery forces along the Wakarusa River near Lawrence, Kansas. In 1861 Strickler married Harriet Staton, daughter of Frederick Staton.

Parents were Abraham and Susannah (Hollingsworth) Strickler.
