A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 19, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry. He faced a court-martial for leaving the march on February 5, 1865, but his service records do not mention any outcome. Whatever punishment he received, if any, could not have been severe because he honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.
He died in Conewago Township, Adams County, from "apoplexy" with "valvular heart disease" a contributing factor.
