Roy was born in Huntingburg, Dubois County, Indiana, the third child and first son of Worth William and Malinda (Huser) Young. Roy’s father worked for the Louisville, Evansville and St. Louis Railroad as a construction foreman and was stationed at the Huntingburg maintenance facility. Roy moved with his family to Princeton, Indiana in about 1891 or 1892 and then to New Albany sometime after 1896 and prior to 1900. Roy played center on the New Albany High School football team in 1904 that won the Southern Indiana Conference championship. After leaving school after his sophomore year he went to work for the Monon Railroad working on a construction gang. On September 5, 1910 he married Lillie May Hilton in Louisville, Kentucky and they moved to Lafayette, Indiana where Roy was a fireman on the Monon steam locomotives. In 1921 he was promoted to engineer and did that for the Monon for the next twenty years or so. In 1922 he ordered a kit home from Sears, Roebuck and Co. and his father and he erected the house at 1933 Vinton St. in Lafayette. In 1928 he was transferred to Bloomington, Indiana and worked out of the McDoel Yard for the remainder of his career. He and his wife Lillie had four children, Nancy, Alice, George and Isabel born between 1916 and 1927. Roy developed heart trouble in about 1940 and succumbed to it in his living room in rural Monroe County, Indiana near Bloomington.
