Thomas Selecman was a farmer and devoted husband and father. He worked on his father's farm until 13 March 1862, when he became a cavalryman with A Company in the 4th Regiment of Virginia Volunteer Cavalry at Prince William. Captured at Strasburg, Virginia on 9 October 1864, he was held at Point Lookout, Maryland until released on 19 June 1865, after the war was over.
