Edward Owen "Eddie" Chewning

Born May 2, 1922, passed July 9, 2010 at the age of 88. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Connie, daughter Kathy Runkle and husband Doug, son Mark Chewning and wife Karen, grandchildren Doug Runkle, Jr., Scott Runkle, and Maren Chewning, great-grandchildren Kylie and Peyton Runkle, sisters Mabel and Nancy, brothers Melvin, Dick, Bill and Alvin as well as their families and numerous friends.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents Pet and Della Chewning, brothers Jerry, Bob, Jim, Corky and sister Sally.

Eddie was born in Moneta, VA, and grew up on a farm there.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army Americal Division during WWII in the South Pacific. Eddie finished his military service at Mather Field and met Connie at a USO dance at the Memorial Auditorium.

He worked for EA Boyd, later Vandenberg motors, for 40 years, retiring as Service Manager at Elk Grove Ford in 1987. He received numerous awards and was greatly admired for his customer service and expertise.

During his retirement Eddie could be found daily in his garage, repairing lawn mowers and "holding court" with his buddies in the neighborhood.

Eddie and Connie enjoyed many years together traveling in their RV around the country. His jovial manner and Virginia-born warmth naturally drew people to him. Eddie's greatest pride and love was his family. He was always there to lend a hand to others. The family would like to extend their warmest appreciation to Lanny Garman, numerous family, friends and the nursing staff at Methodist for their support and loving care of our father.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday July 14th from 2 - 7:30 pm. Funeral service will be held Thursday July 15th at 2 pm at East Lawn Mortuary 9189 E. Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriners Children's Hospital Sacramento or the charity of your choice.
