Samuel A. Lane was Akron, Ohio sheriff from 1856 untill 1861. He went on to serve as the editor of the Summit County Beacon and Daily Beacon newspapers from 1861 untill 1875.
He then returned to politics and became sheriff again from 1876 untill 1878. He also served as Akron mayor, 1881 - 1882. He had also started a semi-monthly reform newspaper called the Buzzard.
He took a trip to California where he painted and sold goods at auctions. Then he returned to Akron and wrote the 1200-page "Fifty Years and Over, Akron and Summit County" in 1892.
