Mrs. Hoopes was born Malinda Marshall Worthington, the sixth child of Dr. Wilmer Worthington. Besides being a physician, her father served as a Pennsylvania State Senator. Malinda founded the West Chester chapter of the DAR. She married Abner Hoopes on May 22, 1865 and was the mother of Wilmer Worthington Hoopes and Sarah Andrews Hoopes Baker.
