COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY - 10/01/2009
ABELL - Frank Robert, of Louisville, died Sunday, September 27, 2009. Frank was the son of the late Thomas Mattingly Abell, originally of Lebanon, KY and Anita Grenough Abell. Mr. Abell was a graduate of St. Xavier High School, the University of Louisville and Columbia University. He was a U.S. Army veteran. For over three decades, Frank was a proud Manhattanite before returning to his roots in Louisville in 1982. A well-known figure on Wall Street ("when Wall Street was Wall Street"), Frank rose to vice-presidency of the world-class Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co., managing the personal fortunes of such literary and theatrical personalities as Mary Ore, and Dorothy and Lillian Gish. Curmudgeon, book lover, philanthropist, Frank was a life member of the Louisville Orchestra Board of Directors. For fifteen years, he was a final jurist for the University of Louisville School of Music's prestigious Grawemeyer Award, and was a faithful supporter of the Louisville Chamber Music Society. Frank was devoted to his Saturday afternoon book club. His volunteer activities included recording over 75 works of literature for the blind. Mr. Abell was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Abell II. He is survived by his brother, James H. Abell (Mary Jo); sister, Ann Abell Hardesty (Gregory) of Mt. Washington, KY; sister-in-law, Elaine Fargo Abell of South Bend, IN; ten nieces and nephews; and his cherished circle of friends. Frank's family and friends wish to acknowledge in particular the compassionate care he received at Sacred Heart Village Nursing Facility. A musical tribute to Frank's life will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 3, followed by a funeral service at noon, at St. Martin of Tours Church, Shelby and Gray Streets. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be sent to: Xaverian Brothers Haitian Mission, 4409 Frederick Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229.
